30 dead, 35 missing due to heavy rains in China

China, At least 30 people have died and 35 others are missing in central China after heavy rains hit the country earlier this week, state-run media reported on Thursday.

Hunan province was particularly affected by ‘Typhoon Gamey’, which landed in eastern China a week ago.

More than 11,000 people have been evacuated from the city of Jixing after some areas recorded 645 millimeters of rain in 24 hours, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday.

Several roads connecting settlements in the Jixing region were temporarily blocked due to extreme weather, which also affected electricity supply and communication infrastructure.

Roads blocked in eight cities in Jixing city, which was most affected by typhoon Gamey, have now been opened. “Preliminary findings show 30 people dead and 35 missing,” state broadcaster CCTV said on Thursday, adding that search and rescue efforts were still ongoing.

Three people were killed in Hunan’s Yongxing county, and 15 others were killed in landslides elsewhere in the province on Sunday, Xinhua said.
