Kathmandu — Nepal’s Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Chandra Kumar Ghimire, paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, at Westminster Palace on Monday. During the meeting, discussions were held on further strengthening the long-standing friendship between Nepal and the UK.
Ambassador Ghimire praised the leading role played by the British Parliament globally, saying that ‘the British Parliament is the mother of all parliaments’. He also handed over a message of congratulations from the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Nepal Federal Parliament, Devraj Ghimire, to Speaker Hoyle.
According to a press release issued by the Nepali Embassy on Wednesday evening, Ambassador Ghimire gave information about the inclusive parliamentary structure of Nepal and the recently formed Nepal-UK parliamentary group during the meeting. He expressed gratitude for the continued support received from the UK’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on Nepal (APPG).
Recalling the friendly relationship between Nepal and Britain for more than two hundred years, Ambassador Ghimire stressed on the continuation of high-level visits and parliamentary exchanges. He also said that the UK’s support is indispensable to address the challenges of climate change, achieve national development goals and smoothly transition from the list of least developed countries (LDCs) by 2026. He also urged the UK government to resolve the long-standing issues of the Gorkha community.
Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle reaffirmed the deep and special relationship between the UK and Nepal and welcomed the cooperation between the parliamentary groups of both countries. He expressed the commitment that the UK will continue to support Nepal in accordance with its priorities.
