Kathmandu. Belgium has become the first country in the world to grant labor rights to sex workers. After the new law, sex workers in Belgium will now receive health insurance, pensions, sick leave, and maternity leave.
According to the BBC, this law, which came into force on December 1, attempts to give sex workers the same employment and protection as other workers.
In 2022, sexual acts were declared decriminalized in Belgium. Since then, there have been demands for sex workers to be given rights including security, employment, and health in the country.
According to the new law in Belgium, sex workers can no longer be fired if they refuse to have sex and are on leave.
Human rights activists applauded the new law. Erin Kilbride of Human Rights Watch called it a revolutionary step. He says that Belgium has taken the best steps in the world for the safety of sex workers.
According to the new law, sex workers will get an employment contract. Apart from this, the rules related to working hours and workplace safety have to be followed. Every room in which sexual activity takes place should be clean and safe.
People who have been convicted of human trafficking, sexual abuse, fraud, etc. will not be allowed to hire sex workers.
In Belgium, sex workers can no longer be fired. Sex workers can resign at any time without giving any notice. They can also refuse clients. Agency
