Kathmandu. With the Lok Sabha elections in India giving a fresh mandate, the exercise of forming a new government has started. The 17th Lok Sabha has been dissolved by President Draupadi Murmu after Prime Minister Narendra Modi resigned from the post.
Even though his party Bharatiya Janata Party alone could not get a majority of 272 seats in the new elections, Modi is ready to claim the formation of a new government as the NDA alliance has a majority. The top leaders of the NDA, including Modi, are set to meet the President on Friday. Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party TDP and Nitishkumar’s Janata Dal United JDU, which won 16 and 12 seats respectively in the Lok Sabha elections, have submitted letters of support to Modi, Indian media reported.
This agreement was reached in the meeting of the top leaders of the NDA alliance held today at Modi’s residence. The meeting unanimously elected Modi as the leader of the alliance. In the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won only 240 seats, but the NDA coalition has an easy majority, i.e. 292 seats.
It is said that before giving support to Modi as Prime Minister, JDU and TDP have set conditions such as that special state status should be given to Bihar, an important ministry should be given to them and the post of Speaker should be given to their party.
On the other hand, the meeting of India Alliance, which succeeded in bringing encouraging results by winning 234 seats, is currently sitting. Their strategy to prevent Modi from becoming the prime minister for the third time by getting the JDU and TDP to join their side, which won the decisive seats in the NDA, does not seem to be successful immediately. With the support of the NDA alliance, Narendra Modi is sure to become the Prime Minister for the third consecutive term.
