Washington. Iran’s President Masoud Pezheskian has warned the US President-elect Donald Trump not to take the risk of a ‘war’ with Iran, stating that Iran does not want ‘nuclear weapons’.
In an interview with NBC News a week before Trump returned to the White House, Pezhekian said, “I hope that Trump will bring peace to the region and the world.”
Washington has not had formal diplomatic relations with Tehran for nearly 45 years, and Trump recently warned during his election campaign that US ally Israel could attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Regarding the possibility of a US-backed Israeli military attack on Iran’s nuclear sites, Peshmerga said, “We will respond to any move. “We do not want war and we are not afraid of war.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that European powers are serious about restarting the nuclear program.
In 2015, Iran and world powers including France, Britain and Germany reached an agreement to ease international sanctions on Tehran in exchange for sanctions on Tehran’s nuclear program.
The United States unilaterally withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reimposed economic sanctions during Trump’s first term.
Tehran complied with the agreement until Washington’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal, but since then it has gradually backed away from its commitments and is now not implementing the deal.
Pezheskian said, “We don’t want to make nuclear weapons or any other weapon, but they accuse us of trying to make a nuclear bomb.”
When asked by NBC News anchor Lester Holt about the possibility of negotiating with Trump after he returns to power, the Iranian leader said that this possibility has not yet been seen.
He said, “Our problem is not in dialogue, it is in commitment.” It depends on the commitments made during negotiations and dialogues.
Pointing to the US, Pezheskian said, “Iran was also forced to withdraw after the other side of the negotiations did not fulfill its promises and obligations.” Agency
