More than 1000 people died in road accidents in Sri Lanka within six months

In Sri Lanka, in the first six months of 2024, there were 1,103 road accidents and 1,154 people died as a result, according to official statistics.

Sri Lanka’s Minister of State for Transport, Lasantha Alagiawanna, admitted that the rate of road accidents in the country is high and said that the government will continue to make every effort to control it.

He said that the National Road Safety Council has allocated 50 million Indian Rupees (about 165,000 US dollars) to the Sri Lankan Police for the purchase of speed control equipment, and that a gazette with new road speed limits will be issued within the next two weeks.
