Kathmandu. An Iranian court has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize winner Nargis Mohammadi to one year in prison on charges of ‘propaganda against the state’.
52-year-old Mohammadi has been imprisoned since November 2021 on charges of advocating against mandatory hijab for women and the death penalty in Iran. “Mohammadi has been sentenced to one year in prison for false propaganda against the system,” wrote lawyer Mustafa Neely on social media X. He said that the reason for issuing this sentence was the call to boycott the parliamentary elections, letters to the Swedish and Norwegian parliamentarians and comments about Mrs. Dina Ghalibaf.
Mohammadi refused to participate in the trial session in Tehran earlier this month. Similarly, in March, she shared an audio message from prison and condemned the “full scale war against women” in Iran. In recent months, Iranian police have stepped up enforcement of the country’s Islamic dress code for women, and in particular are using video surveillance. Under a law adopted after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, women in Iran are required to cover their hair in public and dress modestly.
