Preparations for presidential elections in Belarus

Kathmandu. As Belarus prepares for presidential elections on January 26, several campaign billboards have appeared on the country’s streets.

The Central Election Commission has registered five candidates for President. The current Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, the Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus Oleg Gaydukevich, the Chairman of the Republican Party of Labor and Justice Alexander Khiznyak, the individual entrepreneur Anna Kanopatskaya and the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus Sergey Tsyrankov.

By law, the President of Belarus is chosen through direct elections. The candidate who receives more than 50 percent of the vote is elected. If no candidate receives a majority, the two leading candidates go to a second round. In which the candidate who receives a simple majority wins. Presidential elections in Belarus are held every five years. In the last election on August 9, 2020, Lukashenko was elected president for the sixth time with 80.1 percent of the vote.
