Kathmandu. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s first foreign visit will be to Thailand amid the invitation of India and China. Prime Minister Oli is going to Thailand in the third week of August to attend the sixth summit of Bay of Bengal Initiative (BIMSTEC).
This will probably be his first foreign visit after he became the Prime Minister last time. The Sixth Summit of BIMSTEC is being held in Bangkok, Thailand on September 4 (19 August). After participating in the BIMSTEC conference, Nepal and Thailand are making Prime Minister Oli’s visit a formal visit with a program of two days of high-level meetings.
Oli is going to go at the invitation of Thai Prime Minister Shretha Thavisin. After becoming the Prime Minister, his first official foreign visit is going to be from Thailand. “Prime Minister Oli will hold high-level official talks in Thailand on September 5 and 6 (August 20 and 21),” said Amrit Bahadur Rai, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Prime Minister Oli has a courtesy call on the Thai King. A program of bilateral formal talks with the counterpart Thavisin has also been fixed. Prime Minister Oli is doing homework on the sidelines with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and others participating in the BIMSTEC conference.
There are seven member countries in BIMSTEC namely Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand. For the summit to take place, there is a provision that the heads of state and heads of government of all member states must attend.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also making preparations for Prime Minister Oli’s visit to America in September. Prime Minister Oli is going to New York to participate in the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations. From September 24 to 30, there is a program to address the United Nations General Assembly by the heads of state and heads of government of the member states. Prime Minister Oli is scheduled to address the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations on September 26.
