Sri Lanka’s Election Commission has announced that the Presidential Election will be held this year. Issuing a statement on the Presidential Election, the Commission said the elections will be held between September 17 and October 16, 2024.
The Commission further said that steps for electing the President will be taken according to provisions in the Constitution.
The previous elections were held in 2019 when Gotabaya Rajapaksa won the popular vote with a big margin. Mr. Rajapaksa resigned from the position in July of 2022 amid the economic crisis and island-wide protests. Thereafter, the Parliament elected Ranil Wickremasinghe as the President for the remainder of the term which ends in November this year.
