Kathmandu –– Hundreds of people have been killed in airstrikes by the army in Sudan’s western Darfur region, a Sudanese war monitoring group has alleged.
According to the group, army warplanes “carried out indiscriminate airstrikes on Tora market in North Darfur, killing hundreds of civilians and seriously injuring dozens”.
Due to telecommunication disruptions in Darfur, the exact timing of the attack and damage could not be independently confirmed, AFP said.
The army, which has been fighting with the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) since April 2023, did not immediately comment on the matter.
Sudan’s long-running war has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced more than 12 million and created the world’s largest famine and displacement crisis.
Darfur, a vast region the size of France, has seen some of the worst violence of the war. The violence has included reports of barrel bombs in civilian areas, paramilitary attacks on famine-stricken displacement camps, and intense ethnic violence.
However, the RSF has deployed highly equipped drones in Darfur. The army maintains dominance of the skies with its fighter jets, regularly attacking RSF positions across the region.
