Kathmandu. Switzerland has banned the wearing of hijab and burqa in public places from today. Women are prohibited from covering their faces in any other way.
According to the agency, if you violate this law, you will have to pay a fine of up to one lakh 51 thousand rupees.
In a referendum held in Switzerland in 2021, 51.21 percent of citizens voted in favor of banning the burqa. Then a law was passed banning the burqa. Which has come into effect from today.
Before Switzerland, Belgium, France, Denmark, Austria, the Netherlands and Bulgaria have already made similar laws. With the implementation of the new law, women will not be able to fully cover their faces in public places including public offices, public transport, restaurants, shops.
In 2022, the lower house of the Swiss parliament voted in favor of a law banning the face veil. 151 members voted in favor of the law and 29 voted against it.
Some have said that the law unfairly targets Muslim women. Supporters of this law claim that it is a necessary step for cultural values and safety in public places. Agency
