The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has asked Israel to allow fuel to be transported to the Gaza Strip. The first supplies of water, food and medicine were delivered to the affected areas on Thursday after Israel agreed.
“We welcome Israel’s announcement that it will not stop the entry of water, food and medicine from Egypt into Gaza. “Fuel is also needed for hospital generators, ambulances and desalination plants, and we urge Israel to add fuel to the life-saving supplies allowed for access to Gaza,” Tedros said.
Israel will allow aid to enter Gaza through Egypt, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced on Wednesday. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, only “food, water and medicine” will be allowed to enter the blockaded Palestinian territories.
“Considering the request of US President Joe Biden, Israel will not block the supply of humanitarian aid through Egypt,” the Prime Minister’s Office said while announcing the Cabinet’s decision.
The statement said, “Citizens of the southern Gaza Strip will be allowed to provide aid on the condition that aid does not reach Hamas, which rules Gaza.”
