20th handicrafts trade fair and 18th Handicrafts Competition organized by Nepal Handicrafts Federations on Friday was inaugurated by President of Nepal Ramchandra Paudel. Inaugurating the event organised on the occasion of the 12th Handicraft Day today in Kathmandu, he said Nepal’s identity can be enhanced internationally through the promotion of handicraft industry and business. The President emphasized that the Nepali handicraft goods cannot be easily copied as these are the indigenous products based on the ancestral skills and vocation of various castes and communities.
Nepal is exporting handicrafts worth Rs 12 billion in a year to over 60 countries. The handicraft trade fair is running from December 14 to 18 to promote local handicraft and generate awareness regarding enterprises of artisans and craftsmen using local resources. There are three pavilions with 130 stalls. Nepal handicraft including hemp items, stonework, metal sculpting, handloom, paper art, paubha paintings, thanga painting, pot art and bamboo art and much more. It is expected that the fair would record more than 100 thousand visitors, according to organizers. The craft competition offers cash prizes to the winners.
