Lumbini : The Himalayan Research Institute is to be established in the Lumbini-based Lumbini Buddhist University.

The Institute will be set up in the University in collaboration of the Nankai University of China and Macau International Think Tank.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed for the same by Lumbini Buddhist University’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Subarna Lal Bajracharya and Macau International Think Tank’s Chairperson Professor Dr Hao Cui.

The Institute will conduct research and studies on the relations between Nepal and China as well as the Buddhist philosophy, art and culture.

On the MoU signing ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Bajracharya highlighted the need to conduct research on the Himalayan Buddhist traditions and archeology and shared that the Institute was for the same.

Similarly, Professor Zhou Wang of the School of Philosophy in Nankai University expressed this confidence that the research and studies to be carried out in the Institute would contribute to strengthening Sino-Nepal relations.

Prof Dr Hao Cui articulated his happiness to collaborate with the Lumbini University to conduct research activities through the Institute. Echoing Prof Wang’s sentiment, he viewed that the research of the Buddhist philosophy, art and culture within the Himalayan periphery could aid in promoting knowledge among the scholars and researchers of the both countries.

Director of the Research Centre at Lumbini University, Prof Dr Gitu Giri, opined the establishment of the Institute would be instrumental for the studies of the Himalayan Buddhist culture. He called for more research on the monastery cultures that have shaped the history.
