Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev in a five-set thriller lasting over five hours to reach his maiden Australian Open final.

The World No. 1 overcame a mid-match injury scare to win 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-7(4), 7-5 in front of a roaring Rod Laver Arena crowd.

Alcaraz started strong, taking the opening set 6-4 and edging the second in a tense tie-break. However, the match shifted in the third set when he clutched his right thigh and groin, calling for a medical time-out. The pause sparked controversy, with Zverev angrily arguing that players cannot take medical breaks for cramps.

Zverev capitalised on Alcaraz’s discomfort, winning back-to-back tie-breaks to force a decider. The German broke early in the fifth set to lead 3-1, but Alcaraz refused to surrender. Feeding off the energy of the crowd, he broke back at 5-5 and then seized on Zverev’s unforced errors to clinch victory.

The win keeps Alcaraz on track to become the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam. He will face either Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner in Sunday’s final. Victory would make him only the eighth man in the Open Era to win all four majors.

Zverev, who had looked poised to pull off an upset, faltered mentally in the closing stages. Meanwhile, Alcaraz’s resilience and fitness under pressure reaffirmed his reputation as one of the sport’s fiercest competitors.
