Sudan- Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has said an airstrike hit a hospital providing healthcare to more than 200,000 people in Jonglei state, South Sudan. “The attack destroyed the hospital’s main warehouse, leaving most of the medical supplies it needs to provide medical care,” MSF said in a statement.
The South Sudanese government’s armed forces are the only armed group in the country with the ability to conduct airstrikes, the organization said. According to the United Nations, the months-long conflict in South Sudan have raised fears of a return to civil war.
Heavy fighting has been taking place in Jonglei, a city in the east of the country on the border with Ethiopia, where government forces are trying to repel an attack by fighters loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army.
One of its staff members was slightly injured in the airstrike on the hospital in Lankien, the organization said. The hospital was evacuated hours before the attack and patients were discharged, it said.
Last month, the South Sudanese army ordered civilians and staff from UN missions and aid agencies to evacuate three counties in Jonglei state ahead of an offensive against opposition forces.
The recent fighting has At least 180,000 people have been displaced in Jonglei, according to the UN mission. About 400,000 people were killed in South Sudan’s 2013-2018 civil war.
