1,153 people were executed worldwide last year, most in Iran

According to a data, the highest number of executions in the world since 2015 was given in 2023.

According to the report published by Amnesty International on Wednesday, last year 1,153 people were sentenced to death. In 2015, 1 thousand 634 people were given this punishment.

In 2023, the death penalty worldwide increased by 30%, Amnesty said. Iran had the highest number of executions that year at 853. Among them are 24 women and 5 children.

Similarly, thousands of people have been sentenced to death in China. But it is said that China could not include it in the report due to the fact that it did not provide official data.

Amnesty’s Secretary General Agnes Callamard has commented that there is a gross disregard for human life in Iran. “A person’s life should have value. But that is not the case in Iran, there death penalty has been given even for minor issues,” she said. According to the report, people from the poor Baloch community have been executed in a discriminatory way.

After Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, and the United States are among the countries that execute the most. 42 people have been executed in America in two years.
