More than 500 arrests during protests in Bangladesh: Police

Dhaka, Police confirmed on Monday that more than 500 people, including leaders of some opposition parties, were arrested during anti-reservation protests in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka.Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesman Farooq Hussain said at least 532 people were arrested during the demonstration. He stated that some of the arrested were Bangladesh National Party BNP leaders.

He said that BNP leader Amir Khusro, Mahmud Chaudhary and spokesperson Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed along with former national football captain and leader Aminul Haque were also arrested.

Hussain informed that the general secretary of the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami Mia Ghulam Parwar has also been arrested.

He said that at least three policemen lost their lives during the unrest in the capital, while about 1,000 were injured and 60 of the injured were in critical condition.

BNP spokesperson AK Wahiduzzaman has said that “Hundreds of BPN leaders and workers have been arrested in the last few days.” Agency
