Ban on 156 medicines including painkillers and multivitamins in India
New Delhi. The Central Government of India has banned 156 cocktail medicines. Many of these medicines may be in your home. The list of prohibited drugs includes pain killers, multivitamins, antiparasitics, and antiallergic drugs. These drugs, which contain more than one drug in one pill, are called fixed-dose combinations (FDCs). These drugs are also known as cocktail drugs.
Drug companies have not yet announced the economic impact of the ban. Most of the banned cocktail drugs were approved for production before 1988. The products of big pharma companies like Cipla, Torrent, Sun Pharma, IPCA Labs and Lupine are also banned.
According to the gazette notification issued by the government, consumption of these 156 types of cocktail drugs poses a risk to the human body. Safer alternatives to banned drugs are said to be available. An expert committee appointed by the center investigated the matter.
In this process, the committee considered the FDC as irrational. The Drug Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) also tested and clarified that there is no justification for these cocktail drugs in terms of medical science. Pharmaceutical companies are said to be examining the ban.
