WASHINGTON– US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that a trade agreement with China is “possible”.
Trump said the US had already agreed to a major trade deal with China in 2020. And, he said, a new deal is possible.
A month into his second term, Trump has threatened China, neighboring Canada, Mexico and the European Union with sweeping tariffs on allies and rivals.
In early February, he imposed a 10 percent additional tariff on all products imported from China. He is also threatening a 25 percent tax on all imported cars and similar or higher tariffs on pharmaceuticals and semiconductors.
Trump had initially announced a 25% tariff on all Canadian and Mexican imports. However, a few hours before the implementation of the decision, it was theoretically put in place and it would not be implemented until March 1, so there was relief for one month.
Last week, he signed an executive order imposing a 25 percent additional tariff on steel and aluminum imports from abroad.
