Acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, is set to assume the responsibilities of party chairman after the demise of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Party sources said that under the BNP constitution, Tarique Rahman has automatically taken over the duties of chairman. However, no formal announcement has been made.
With the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election scheduled for 12th of next month, BNP leaders said the issue needs swift resolution, particularly regarding campaign materials. As per the election code of conduct, candidates may only use the photograph of the current party chief on banners, posters and leaflets.
BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the party would seek clarification from the Election Commission on the matter. Former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia passed away on the 30th of last month after a prolonged illness.
