ADB is working with the Government of Nepal and other development partners to ensure quality education for children through the model school program

ADB is working with the Government of Nepal and other development partners to ensure quality education for children through the model school program—especially in the secondary level—and improve learning outcomes in science, mathematics, and English subjects, in which students perform poorly. The plan seeks to upgrade at least one public secondary school in each of Nepal’s 753 municipalities to a model school.

The program is supported by eight development partners including ADB. ADB has pledged $120 million for SSDP, of which $28 million has been allocated for the model school program under results-based financing.

Grade 12
Shree Kalika Secondary School, Pokhara

I’ve always aspired to become a doctor. I like this school’s focus on practical education and the teaching methodology. I also chose to study here because of its modern physical infrastructure and peaceful environment.

Shila is one of the students attending the more than 200 community schools in Nepal, which have been upgraded to model schools with support from ADB.

ADB is working with the Government of Nepal and other development partners to ensure quality education for children through the model school program.

The government introduced model schools in 2016 to end disparity in access to quality education, especially in the secondary level.

The model school concept focuses on improving learning outcomes in science, mathematics, and English subjects.

Low grades in these subjects have created barriers for students intending to pursue higher education and vocational courses.

Building public trust in community schools is very important to the Government of Nepal. Keeping this in mind, we developed the School Sector Development Plan (SSDP). One of the objectives of the model school program is to raise investment in the physical infrastructure of community schools. Model school program also emphasizes providing training to teachers, designing appropriate curriculum, and making necessary tools available to improve learning outcomes in science, mathematics and English subjects. The main objective of this program is to enhance the overall quality of education.

Shree Bhawani Vidhyapeeth Secondary School, Parbat

I am happy the school is here in my locality, and I get to study the subject of my choice.  If not for this school, I would have to forego my dream of studying science as my parents cannot afford to send me to a school far away.

Shree Bhawani Vidhyapeeth Secondary School, Parbat

We have made strides in physical infrastructure development since becoming a model school. The parents are satisfied with our  technology-led education. As a leading school in the area, we also provide support and guidance to neighboring community schools.

Education for children means progress for the whole community. It is an investment that is critical for human development, which is an ADB priority. We are satisfied to see the progress achieved by the model schools, and we are confident that this will be sustained through strengthened schools systems and governance.
