At least 25 people have died in different parts of Bangladesh in the ongoing nationwide protest against reservation. Besides, hundreds of people have been injured. Protests and violence are constantly increasing, BBC said. In many places, the protestors are facing violent clashes with the police force. Internet services have been shut down in many places of the country, and the protestors have demanded that reservation in government jobs be abolished.
For the past few days, university students have been protesting against reservation in government jobs for the children of soldiers who fought in the liberation war of 1971. Those who fought the war of independence from Pakistan in 1971 are called liberation warriors. A third of the government jobs in the country are reserved for children.
The students have been holding a rally against this for the past few days. The students say that this reservation system is discriminatory, but jobs should be given on the basis of merit. Meanwhile, after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s address to the nation on Wednesday, the violence has flared up further.
Protesters called for a ‘complete shutdown’ after the PM’s address. Violent demonstrations have started in various places of the country since last night.
On the one hand, those opposing reservation took to the streets, while on the other, various organizations of the ruling party also took to the streets. Looking at the current situation, it seems that after the speech of the Prime Minister on Wednesday night, the controversy has increased.
