Kathmandu. The death toll has reached 150 when a migrant boat overturned in the coastal area of the West African country of Mauritania.
Only 89 dead bodies have been found during the relief and rescue. Yali Fall, the president of the fishing association of the southwestern city of Ndiago, informed that since Monday, the locals have been burying the bodies that have been pulled from the shore.
More than 5,000 people have died at sea in the first five months of 2024 trying to reach the Canary Islands, according to the migrant rights group Walking Borders.
The West African country’s state news agency and the head of the fishermen’s union said Friday it had been a week since the boat capsized.
The coast guard found the bodies of 89 migrants who were going to Europe along with 170 people. Nine people, including a five-year-old girl, were rescued.
The Atlantic migration route from the West African coast to the Canary Islands is one of the world’s deadliest.
This route is mostly used by African immigrants to reach Spain. Agency
