EU allocates 4 million euros in grants for fertilisers, seeds & training to most vulnerable farmers in Sri Lanka

European Union(EU) has allocated 4 million euros in grants for fertilisers, seeds and training to the most vulnerable farmers in Sri Lanka. The programme will be implemented by Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in the Island Nation. Sri Lanka’s agriculture had been severely impacted over last two harvest seasons due to major crop failures and lack of fertilisers.

Sri Lanka’s Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said during 2022 fertilisers were made available under an Indian credit. Ambassador of European Union, Denis Chaibi expressed pleasure on joining hands with FAO for reviving Sri Lanka’s Agriculture sector to prevent food shortages and increase farmers’ incomes. FAO representative in Sri Lanka Vimlendra Sharan appreciated the generous assistance from EU.

Targeted beneficiaries under the project will be 41000 small holder farmers with land holdings up to half hectare in the districts of Polonnaruwa, Hambantota, Badulla and Ampara.
