According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, about 2.6 million people die every year due to alcohol consumption.
According to the United Nations Health Agency’s latest report on alcohol and health, this number of people die every year due to drunk driving, alcohol-induced violence and abuse, and many diseases and disorders.
According to the latest available data, 2.6 million deaths in 2019 were due to alcohol consumption, the report said. It was 4.7 percent of all deaths worldwide this year. About three fourth of the deaths were men.
“Drug use seriously damages individual health, increases the risk of chronic diseases, mental health conditions and tragically causes millions of preventable deaths every year,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
He said that after 2010, there has been a slight decrease in alcohol consumption and related harms worldwide. Stating that the youth are disproportionately affected, he said, “But the health and social burden due to alcohol use has become unacceptably high.”
According to the WHO, the highest proportion of deaths due to alcohol in 2019 was 13 percent among people aged 20 to 39 years.
