Kathmandu. This year, more than 1,000 people, including one Nepali, have lost their lives during the Hajj, a religious pilgrimage to Mecca, the holy place of pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. According to the calculation based on the information provided by Arab diplomats, 1081 pilgrims from around 10 countries have lost their lives, according to international media AFP.
The temperature in Makkah is up to 51.8 degrees Celsius and many pilgrims have lost their lives due to heat stroke and heat. It is said that extreme heat, physical fatigue, and large gatherings have added to the risk of the Hajj.
Egypt has the highest number of deaths, i.e. 658 people and among them 630 are unregistered pilgrims. Similarly, 68 Indians, 35 Pakistanis, 165 Indonesians, 41 Jordanians, 35 Tunisians and 11 Iranians have lost their lives during Hajj. Similarly, it is said that pilgrims from Senegal, Sudan and Iraq have also lost their lives.
Saudi authorities have warned pilgrims to drink plenty of water, carry umbrellas and not go outside during the day. Hajj officials said that a large number of medical teams and volunteers have been deployed to provide necessary assistance to the pilgrims. It is said that cooling center, hydration point, water fountain etc. have been arranged for the heat to escape.
Saudi officials have said that more than 1.8 million Muslims from around the world have reached Mecca for this year’s pilgrimage. Every year, hundreds of people from Nepal also go on pilgrimage. The pilgrimage which started last Friday i.e. June 14, ended on Wednesday i.e. June 19.
