Nepal observes National Agricultural Biodiversity Day today. It’s an annual observance in the Himalayan nation dedicated to recognising and promoting the importance of agricultural biodiversity. To mark the day, a festival was organised in Bhrikutimadap of Kathmandu Valley, where a rich variety of paddy was on display along with a community-based seed bank. Varieties of crops, wild species, mushrooms, and traditional farming knowledge that sustain food security, livelihoods, culture, and the environment in Nepal were showcased in the festival.
National Agricultural Biodiversity Day is a significant initiative by the government of Nepal to celebrate the day, reflecting growing national attention toward preserving Nepal’s rich agro-biodiversity, which has faced threats from habitat loss and modern agricultural practices.
On the occasion, Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav has emphasised the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources. He has highlighted that all citizens and relevant stakeholders must be conscious about the conservation and sustainable use of resources. All three levels of government have been given the responsibility for conservation, and since Nepal is a signatory to international treaties, the importance of biodiversity conservation has increased even more.
