Nepal has been elected Vice-President for the Asia-Pacific states of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Nepal has been elected Vice-President for the Asia-Pacific states of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Lok Bahadur Thapa, Chief of the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York, will lead Nepal’s representation within the 54-member ECOSOC. Next year, Nepal will assume the chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific states.

The election of Nepal as Vice-President of ECOSOC — a key United Nations organ — elicited pride within the nation, as noted by former Ambassador Sundarnath Bhattarai.

ECOSOC serves as a vital platform for fostering debates, encouraging innovative thinking, building consensus on forward paths, and coordinating efforts toward socio-economic progress, including the pursuit of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

In addition to Nepal, the 54-member council also elected two other vice presidents: Krzysztof Szczerski of Poland for Eastern European states and Maritza Chan Valverde of Costa Rica for Latin America and Caribbean states.
