Operationalisation of Markichowk substation of Tanahun enhances Nepal’s integrated electricity system
The construction of the 220/132 kV Markichowk substation at Aanbukhaireni Rural Municipality, Tanahun, has been completed and is fully operational now. The Markichowk substation enables the transmission of electricity from hydropower projects in the Marsyangdi River basin to Kathmandu Valley. The Markichowk substation now allows electricity from Marsyangdi’s hydropower projects to reach Kathmandu Valley efficiently. The estimated cost of the Markichowk and Matatirtha substations is approximately Rs 2.5 billion.
The newly commissioned infrastructure will significantly enhance the capacity and reliability of Nepal’s integrated electricity system. India and Nepal signed a memorandum of understanding to export 10,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Nepal to India over the next 10 years.
