Romance in the Snow
A short story by Ranjit K. Sahu
You have heard like many of your peers that seeing the “Snow couple” enhances the love life and are curious about the reality. Who wants to suffer a heartbreak anyway and take chances! Surely you would be delighted to see that you have got an opportunity to visit the town to build and strengthen your love life.
When the snow glides down the streets of the small town on the hill side, you know it is soon time for the romantic rendezvous to be observed. The hotel register would have many testimonials from guests who stayed before you about the joy they experienced. The manager would show you the emails of people who sent a response about their improved romantic life after their visit to the town. Thankfully your suite window faces the huge mountain that is capped in white snow from the beginning of winter. You do not have to go to the main dining hall to look out at the hillside. Watch the layers accrue each day turning the entire bluish entity to white. It is not until every spot on the mountain is covered in white that the tango happens!
The two forms appear each evening at a different spot on the mountain; you would need to search their outlines in the snow though as they merge with the background easily. This is what most people come to watch. No one knows who they are or what their purpose is on the hills, but they disappear before dawn and each night seems to fill a unique joy inside you. The best viewing is right at dusk when they appear or during moonlight nights to identify the movements of white bodies on white snow. Keep your binoculars clean on moonlight nights.
Otherwise, the town has not much to offer in terms of variety. It is perched on the hill side with minimal resources at its disposal but keeps you far from the maddening urban crowds. Thank your stars that you found an accommodation and made it in time before the hill station is cut off from the rest of the world. There is no better way to relax as you wait for your new career in spring. If you don’t see anything also worry not for the hospitality and warmth of the people will make your trip worthwhile. Remember once you enter your job life and marry your sweetheart, it would be decades before you realize that these days and pleasures were the best part of your life when you were with yourself! Do not let go such opportunities ever!
