Kathmandu – Thai Prime Minister Anupin Charnvirakul has dissolved parliament and announced mid-term elections.
He dissolved parliament amid political instability following a week of border clashes with Cambodia.
According to the international news organization ‘BBC’, he has said that elections will be held within 45 to 60 days.
In a public announcement on Friday, the Prime Minister announced the dissolution of Parliament, citing an unstoppable challenge that had arisen in the border region since his minority government took office three months ago.
“The appropriate solution is to dissolve parliament… which paves the way for returning political power to the people,” he said.
Anupin, who has a business background, became Thailand’s prime minister in August 2023. After taking office in September, he said he would dissolve parliament by the end of January. Now, facing a no-confidence motion, he has brought the election earlier than expected.
The government has faced criticism for its poor response to the devastating floods that hit southern Thailand last month, which killed at least 176 people.
The announcement of the dissolution of parliament comes amid the latest clashes with Cambodia, which have killed at least 20 people and displaced millions.
Thailand has been in political turmoil for the past year, with two prime ministers ousted by courts.
