UN says majority of migrant deaths in 10 years from drowning

New York. In recent years, there have been a lot of reports of drowning migrants. According to a report published by the International Organization for Migration of the United Nations (UN), 64 thousand migrants have died in the last 10 years.
Out of these, 38 thousand 400 migrants drowned in the sea. 27,000 people died in the Mediterranean Sea.
Most migrants try to reach southern Europe from North America through the Mediterranean. IOM data analyst Andrea García-Borza says that the Mediterranean is a dangerous area to travel in. She said that the data of the Mediterranean Sea is looked at more intensively than other regions. He says that it is difficult to get reliable data because it is difficult to monitor areas like the Sahara desert.
In more than half of the cases, the IOM was unable to ascertain the gender or age of the migrant. More than a third of the identified migrants came from conflict-affected countries or countries with large refugee populations. According to the report, in 2023, more than 8,500 people died on the migration route. According to the IOM, the year 2023 can be called the most dangerous year. It is said that this year’s figures may also be alarming.
