UN welcomes the passage of the Transitional Justice Bill

Kathmandu: In order to complete the remaining work of the peace process related to transitional justice, the bill to enact laws necessary for the investigation of disappeared persons and the truth-telling and reconciliation commission has been passed by both houses of the federal parliament. The United Nations welcomed the bill’s passage.

The High Commissioner of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Volker Türk, welcomed the passage of the Transitional Justice Bill by both the Houses of Nepal and emphasized that the implementation of the Bill should be victim-centered.

He expressed his belief that the bill, which was passed 18 years after the peace agreement, would prove to be a milestone in the establishment of lasting peace in Nepal. He said that it would be easy to resolve all issues related to truth and reconciliation.

In a statement issued in Geneva on Thursday night, Turkish High Commissioner stressed that independent people should be appointed as officials in both commissions in a transparent manner. Mentioning that Nepal has been established in the regional and international world as an exemplary country that has successfully brought the peace process to a logical conclusion, he has responded that the commission is ready to support the Nepalese government in every way at this important stage of the peace process.
