Kathmandu. African leaders attending the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) have unveiled a life-size statue of the late President of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.
The headquarters of the African body has been unveiled in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Nyerere is credited with spearheading the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the predecessor of today’s AU.
He was one of the founding fathers of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Nyerere’s statue is the third statue erected at the AU headquarters complex next to the late Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and the late President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah.
Angolan President Joao Lourenco, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and AU Commission Chairman Mousa Faki Mahamat were present at the unveiling ceremony.
