US President Donald Trump has announced the launch of a new federal website, named TrumpRx.gov, offering steep discounts on dozens of commonly used prescription drugs.

Speaking at White House, President Trump described it as the largest reduction in drug prices in US history and a key step towards ending decades of Americans subsidising lower prices abroad. He said people are going to save a lot of money and be healthy.

He added that starting immediately, consumers can use the site to access discounted prices on prescription medicines through coupons redeemable at pharmacies. He argued that Americans have long paid more for medicines than patients in other countries.

The US President said that 16 of the world’s 17 largest pharmaceutical companies have signed agreements committing to the pricing framework, with the remaining company expected to join.

President Trump said the agreements also require new medicines introduced in the United States to be offered at the same lowest global price.
