World Red Cross Day was celebrated in Nepal

Kathmandu. On the occasion of the World Red Cross Day, the main ceremony was organized at the central office of Nepal Red Cross Society. On that occasion, as part of the Red Cross campaign in Nepal, the heads of the organizations jointly hoisted the Red Cross flag and laid wreaths on the photo of ‘Jan Henry Duna’.
This day is celebrated every year on May 8, celebrating the birthday of the founder of the Red Cross campaign, John Henry Duna, who initiated the Red Cross campaign in the world in 1863. This year, the day has been celebrated with the original slogan ‘Keep Humanity Alive’.

In the program, Acting President of Nepal Red Cross Society, Radha Nepali, highlighted the importance of this year’s World Red Cross Day and said that the services provided by the Red Cross to keep humanity alive should be overflowing with humanitarian service. He said that humanity is reflected in the activities conducted by the society and said that the Red Cross workers are working round the clock to keep the Red Cross head high.

Society’s General Minister Bhupati Lal Shrestha said that since its establishment, Nepal Red Cross Society has been active as a supporter of the government to reduce human disasters. He emphasized that the government and organizations including the Red Cross should move forward in an integrated manner to reduce the challenges faced by humanity.

Bir Bahadur Basnet, treasurer of the society, said that on the day of the World Red Cross Day, the Red Cross workers should improve their shortcomings as well as vow to move forward unitedly following the seven principles of the campaign.

Azmat Ullah, head of Nepal of the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC), said that the Red Cross is different from other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and said that it follows the seven principles and supports the governments of the respective countries worldwide.

International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Nepal Head Sandesh Shrestha praised the service rendered by the volunteers of the Nepal Red Cross Society as the first rescuers in the community and said that the Red Cross Law should be made in Nepal. He mentioned that the ICRC is committed to cooperation and support for this, saying that laws should be made in coordination with the government.

Youth Red Cross Circle Thaiva Lalitpur circle president Siwani Thapamar said that doing humanitarian service brings happiness and mentioned that the role of youth is important to reduce human suffering and protect humanity.

Manoj Kumar Thapa, Deputy General Minister of the society conducted the main function of the day. On that occasion, under the International Federation of Red Cross, there are currently national societies in 191 countries of the world.

Officials and members of the central working committee of Nepal Red Cross Society, representatives of the provinces, representatives and employees of the International Federation of Red Cross and International Committee, representatives of partner national societies, youth volunteers, employees of the Nepal Red Cross Society central office and others were present in the program. The central office employees donated blood in the blood donation program held at the central office today.

Nepal Red Cross Society (Nereso) was established on 19th August 2020 as an integral part of Red Cross campaign. At present, Red Cross has provincial offices in all seven provinces, district branch offices in 77 districts, 1,615 sub-branch offices and 6,934 junior and youth circles at all local levels. There are 930,000 members and volunteers affiliated to these organizational bodies which have been extended to the community level.
