Agency. At least 70 people have died due to storms and floods in northern Afghanistan’s Baghlan and Takhar provinces on Friday, local officials said. In Baghlan, the natural disaster hit Gojargah-e-Noor, Zelgah, Nahrin, Baghlan-e-Markazi and Barka districts, as well as the provincial capital Pul-e-Khumri, said Hedayatullah Hamdard, provincial director of the Disaster Management Authority.
Foreign media quoted the United Nations International Organization for Migration as saying that more than 200 people died in Baghlan and thousands of houses were destroyed or damaged. Ahmad Sir Sajid, Head of Disaster Management Authority of Takhar, said on Saturday that 20 people were killed and 14 injured due to storms and floods in Takhar province’s Nama Ab, Ishkamish, Farkhar and Kafgan districts.
According to him, 300 houses, electricity and communication services were seriously damaged. Afghanistan has been facing heavy rains and floods since last month. Typhoons and floods have also damaged most parts of other northern provinces including Badakhshan and Samangan.
