90 dead after boat capsizes off Mozambique’s northern coast

KATHMANDU: More than 90 people have died after a boat sank off the northern coast of Mozambique. Out of 130 people on the boat, 5 people were rescued safely.

According to officials in Nampula province, people who were trying to escape the cholera outbreak died in a boat accident. Most of the dead are children.

It is assumed that the accident happened because the boat, which was not suitable for carrying passengers, had more passengers than its capacity. An unverified video posted on social media shows dozens of bodies lying on the beach.

The boat was traveling from Lunga to Mozambique Island off the coast of Nampula province when the accident occurred. Nampula province has been the worst affected by the cholera outbreak that has spread to several countries in southern Africa since January last year
