Number of Non-Resident Indians in Nepal Increases by One Lakh in a Year

The largest number in South Asia is in Nepal,

Kathmandu. The number of Non-Resident Indians in Nepal has increased by one lakh in the last one year. According to the data released by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the number of Non-Resident Indians in Nepal has reached 7 lakh in 2024. In the previous year, i.e. 2023, this number was 6 lakh.

The data of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs shows that the number of Non-Resident Indians in Nepal has increased by one lakh in the last one year. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has released the details of the ‘Population of Indians Abroad’.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, there are Non-Resident Indians and People of Indian Origin in 204 countries of the world. More than 4.41 percent of the Non-Resident Indians in the world are in Nepal.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, there are a total of 35.421 thousand 987 Indians abroad, including 15.850 thousand 612 Non-Resident Indians and 19.571 thousand 375 People of Indian Origin in those countries. This data is as of November 27, 2024.

According to the data of the Ministry of External Affairs of India, there are more Indians abroad than the total population of Nepal.

Nepal has the sixth largest number of non-resident Indians. According to the data of the Ministry of External Affairs, the highest number of non-resident Indians is in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with 3,554,274, followed by Saudi Arabia with 2,460,603, the United States with 2,077,158, Canada with 1,016,274, Kuwait with 9,93,284 and Nepal with 700,000.

According to the data of the Ministry of External Affairs, Nepal has the largest number of non-resident Indians in South Asia. Among the South Asian countries, there are 600,000 non-resident Indians in Bhutan, 7,000 in Bangladesh, 27,065 in the Maldives and 7,500 in Sri Lanka.

According to the data, among the South Asian countries, there is not a single non-resident Indian or citizen of Indian origin in Afghanistan or Pakistan.

Among the South Asian countries, Sri Lanka has the largest number of citizens of Indian origin. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs states that there are 1.6 million such people in Sri Lanka.

Indians in Nepal send large remittances to India. A study has shown that most remittances go to India from Nepal.

In a study conducted by PU Research Center, a research organization in Washington, USA, it was shown that in 2017, three billion 16 million US dollars were remitted from Nepal to India. At the current exchange rate, this is more than four trillion 17 billion rupees.

A PU study showed that 93.49 percent of the total remittances going out of Nepal go to India alone.

In 2017, remittances from India to Nepal alone were one billion two million US dollars. The remittances coming from India were 14.62 percent of the total remittances coming into Nepal that year. In the study, it was shown that in 2017, a total of 6 billion 979 million USD remittances from 72 countries entered Nepal.
