After three years of detention in China, journalist Cheng Lei has been released and returned to Australia
Canberra. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Wednesday that an Australian journalist of Chinese origin, who was convicted of spying and imprisoned in China for three years, has returned to Australia.
According to him, journalist Cheng Li has reunited with his two children in Melbourne. 48-year-old Cheng used to work in the international department of China’s state broadcaster CCTV.
“His case was settled through the legal process in China”, Prime Minister Albanese said to the reporters.
Journalist Cheng’s return comes ahead of Albanese’s planned visit to Beijing this year. However, the date of Prime Minister Albanese’s visit to Beijing has not been finalized.
The Albanese government is lobbying for the release of San Cheng and Yang Hengzhen, an Australian citizen of Chinese origin who has been detained in China since 2019.RSS
