Kathmandu – Nepali boxer Chandra Bahadur Thapa Magar has created history by winning a bronze medal in the 54 kg weight category of the ongoing IBA Men’s World Boxing Championship in Dubai.
In the semifinals, he was defeated 5-0 by a player from Kazakhstan. Boxer Thapa has received 75,000 US dollars as a prize.
He entered the semifinals by defeating Bastar Mashihor Yogune Holi of Indonesia by 5-0 points in round 32, Yegoryan Davit of Armenia by 5-0 points in round 16, and Kazemi Mehdi of Iran by 5-0 points in round 8 (quarterfinals). However, he lost to Kazakhstan player Biboshinov Saken by 5-0 points in the semifinals and won the bronze medal.
Coach Deepak Maharjan expressed happiness over the historic achievement. He said, “We participated in this competition targeting the 20th Asian Games to be held in Japan. We are happy that a historic achievement has been achieved.
