The deep depression off Sri Lanka’s eastern coast has intensified into a cyclonic storm named Ditwa. Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology announced that the system formed in the Bay of Bengal close to the Sri Lankan coastline was located about 120 km south-east of Batticaloa earlier in the afternoon and is moving north-northwest. Further strengthening is expected over the next several hours.
Authorities warn that the system will bring continued heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across much of the country. Rainfall exceeding 200 mm is likely in several northern and central districts, with winds expected to reach 60-70 km/h and gusts up to 80 km/h.
The Meteorology Department has urged the public to remain alert to advisories and take precautions as adverse conditions are forecast to persist in the coming days.
