Germany and Nepal marked 50 years of technical cooperation at an anniversary event held at GIZ Nepal’s office in Khumaltar on Friday.

The partnership, beginning with heritage preservation in Bhaktapur in the early 1970s, now extends across energy, health, sustainable economic development, agriculture, post-earthquake reconstruction, and urban development.

Finance Minister Rameshwor Prasad Khanal, the chief guest, said the 50-year collaboration reflects “trust, cooperation and shared aspirations,” and called for deeper partnership in renewable energy, public health, decentralization and sustainable infrastructure.

German Ambassador Udo Volz noted that cooperation has evolved from restoring temples to advancing digital solutions, while GIZ Nepal Country Representative Paulina Campos Monteros highlighted GIZ’s role as a long-term technical partner working with government and communities.

A panel discussion reflected on past achievements and outlined future cooperation priorities. Germany remains a key development partner for Nepal, with support channelled through GIZ, KfW Development Bank and PTB, the embassy stated.
