India is ready to return its citizens living illegally in the US

WASHINGTON,. India has said that it will return the Indian citizens who are living illegally in the US. External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said after meeting top diplomats from US President Donald Trump’s new administration that India is ready to take back its citizens illegally residing in the United States.

Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar made such a comment after a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Tuesday, one day after Trump took office.

Trump issued an executive order this week directing him to step up his goal of cracking down on illegal immigration and deporting millions of immigrants.

Jaishankar said New Delhi is ready to take back undocumented Indians and is in the process of certifying its citizens in the United States who can be deported to India.

“We want Indian talent and skills to get maximum opportunities globally,” Jaishankar told a group of Indian journalists in Washington on Wednesday. “We are also strongly opposed to illegal movement and illegal immigration.”

He said, “We have always taken the view that if any of our citizens are illegally staying in any country in the world, including the US, if they are our citizens, we are always open to their lawful return to India.”

Jaishankar said this in response to the news that India is working to deport 18,000 Indians in collaboration with the Trump administration.

“Secretary Rubio emphasized the Trump administration’s desire to work with India to advance economic ties and address concerns related to irregular migration,” US State Department spokesperson Tommy Bruce said in a statement after the meeting on Tuesday.

India is the world’s fifth largest economy and enjoys the world’s fastest growing GDP, but millions of Indians still migrate abroad every year in search of better opportunities. Its diaspora is spread across the globe, with the United States being the top destination of choice.

According to the latest US census, in the 2020s, the population of Indian-Americans increased by 50 percent to 4.8 million, while in 2022, more than one-third of the approximately 1.3 million Indian students studying abroad were in the United States. Agency
