The Government has said that 60 merchant vessels carrying cargo were safely moved through the Strait of Hormuz despite the heightened security situation in the West Asia region. Replying to a question in Parliament, the government also disclosed that 3,972 Indian seafarers were repatriated from the Gulf region, while a round-the-clock crisis management system handled tens of thousands of distress calls and emails.
The government’s response highlights India’s maritime response during the ongoing West Asia crisis, underscoring how New Delhi managed to keep one of the country’s most critical trade arteries functioning even as tensions threatened shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, and serves as the world’s most critical maritime chokepoint for energy supplies.
