Filmmaker Karan Johar has once again expressed admiration for Aditya Dhar’s blockbuster spy thriller Dhurandhar, admitting that the film made him reflect deeply on his own journey as a filmmaker. Calling the experience inspiring, Johar said the film left a lasting impact on him both creatively and emotionally.

Speaking at the book launch event of Dining With Stars by Anupama Chopra, Karan Johar shared how Dhurandhar stood out for its storytelling and technical finesse. He said the film impressed him with its seamless narrative and restrained direction.

“I was completely blown away by Dhurandhar. It makes you feel like your craft is limited in some ways,” Johar said. “What I loved was that the director never seemed self-aware or eager to show off. The storytelling flowed naturally, and the use of background music was outstanding.”

Johar further explained that the film’s understated visual language and strong emotional core made it especially impactful. According to him, the film’s ability to tell a powerful story without overt stylistic excess is what truly sets it apart.

Reflecting on how the film influenced him personally, he added, “It made me question my ability as a filmmaker, and that’s always a good thing. I see that as growth. I began the year loving Saiyaara and ended it loving Dhurandhar. I also absolutely loved Lokah.”

This is not the first time Karan Johar has praised Dhurandhar. Shortly after its release, he shared a glowing review on social media, applauding director Aditya Dhar, lead actor Ranveer Singh, and the entire cast and crew for delivering an exceptional cinematic experience.

About Dhurandhar

Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar is a high-octane spy action thriller that follows Hamza, an Indian intelligence officer played by Ranveer Singh. The story revolves around his dangerous mission to infiltrate the gang of Rehman Dakait (played by Akshaye Khanna) in Pakistan’s Lyari region to uncover links with the ISI.

The film also features Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, and several supporting actors in pivotal roles. Despite receiving mixed critical reviews, Dhurandhar has emerged as a massive commercial success, collecting over ₹1,065 crore worldwide, with domestic earnings set to cross ₹700 crore.

With audience anticipation at an all-time high, Dhurandhar Part 2 is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 19, 2026.
