In the Baltic nation of Latvia, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has reported that the country recorded a temperature of -32 degrees Celsius yesterday. The Northern European country has hit with the severest cold spell in 12 years this weekend. In most parts of Latvia, temperatures ranged between -16 and -26 degrees, with the warmest weather, -7 degrees, reported in Kolka, which is located in northwestern Latvia.
Heating bills and shortages of wood pellets have emerged as some of the most serious issues caused by the unusually cold winter. However, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has said that there is no energy emergency in the country.
Latvia’s Fire and Rescue Service and the Emergency Medical Service called on people to handle heating equipment with particular caution and to take care of their own and others’ safety.
