Nepal has maintained diplomatic relations with the island nation of Kiribati

Kathmandu. Nepal has established diplomatic relations with Kiribati, an island nation located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. With this, the number of countries with which Nepal has established diplomatic relations has reached one hundred and eighty-three.According to the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York, the Joint Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of diplomatic relations was signed by Lok Bahadur Thapa, the Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations, and Teburoro Tito, the Permanent Representative of Kiribati to the said world organization, in a brief program held at the Mission today.

Also, the ambassadors of both countries signed a letter informing UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres that diplomatic relations between Nepal and Kiribati have been established. On that occasion, the permanent representatives of both countries exchanged views on various matters of mutual interest and common interest, sharing on the development issues of underdeveloped countries, United Nations and other international forums, and exchanging views on various issues of mutual interest.

The population of Kiribati is 120,000 and became a member of the United Nations on September 14, 1999. Nepal and Kiribati are members of the G-77 and China and the group of least developed nations.
